Where the Terrorists?

I Want to Fly
I woke up a while ago from a kaleidoscopic of dreams involving various emotions, desires and problems that swirl around from my past. After I woke up, a thought began to condense that was amplified by the reading I enjoyed a few minutes later. I need to capture it before I lose it.
In my dream I was riding along a highway and saw a small group of people laying on top of a large kite-type wing riding it like a hang-glider. Then I saw other various similar flying contraptions, some without people on them and some being towed by boats or cars. Immediately an intense desire welled up within me to be able to fly on one of those. My desire to fly has been one of the deepest longings all of my life and when I was younger I used to have frequent dreams about flying, though many of them included great difficulty and inhibitions.
The dream moved on to other unrelated but strange and unexpected events involving pets, estranged family members and the collapse of a trailer house with our things in it after being hit by the wing of an old fighter aircraft taxiing past. I have no idea if any of these things have any meaning for me or they were just a collage created from the process of filing away yesterday's batch of memories. But the intense desire to fly continued into my waking consciousness and linked with the verse I read from one of the devotionals I read.
And I saw another angel flying in midheaven, having an eternal gospel to preach to those who live on the earth, and to every nation and tribe and tongue and people; (Revelation 14:6)
I have heard this text espoused and expostulated all of my life, but I never linked it with my own personal craving to be able to fly like the angels do even though that is exactly what I have always wanted. One of the conditions that I always had associated with my desire to fly was to have as little props as possible while enjoying the freedom of flight. In other words, gliding would be better than motorized flight and hang-gliding even better. Better yet, I heard about para-gliding in which a person could catch an updraft with nothing more than a carefully designed parachute type outfit and could soar around in the air under a giant canopy with very little apparatus involved while enjoying the thrills of seeming weightlessness and seeing the world from high above the ground.
At one point in my life I did manage to earn a private pilot's license but I have not been able to afford to fly for many years now in that capacity. But my desire to fly has not diminished much and I think that maybe it goes beyond just a fancy of my own and is rooted in a primordial function for which humans were originally destined to enjoy and has been stymied by the entrance of sin.
But there was another little element of my dreams that alerted me to something that I believe might be very significant in this context. As I watched some of the flying contraptions I noticed that some didn't have anyone on them and the reason was because it was against the local laws. This stirred up a bit of resentment in me that laws can be so limiting to restrict the natural desires of the heart that are implanted by God.
Upon reflection after I woke up I sensed that there was more to this than simply being prevented from having a good time for a few minutes riding around on something similar to a hang-glider. In fact, the more I consider this in the light of the messages from the three free-flying angels in Revelation 14 I think there is something here that may be very significant. For the longings and desires that have been slowly awakening in my damaged heart currently under reconstruction by the Spirit of God includes an intense desire to be free of the inhibitions that have suffocated my spirit for all of my life and prevented me from thriving and growing and really celebrating life with joy and abandon. And that is the same feeling that I begin to experience when I am allowed to really fly.
One thing that seemed drawn to my attention was the artificial restrictions imposed on those who fail to conform to the ways that the world demands they must live just a few verses earlier.
And he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:17)
This is accomplished by the means of rules, part of the counterfeit system of control that has been invented by Satan to mimic the true ways that God relates to His created beings. I have explored this at some length before, but to put it simply, God operates on principles but the world follows the lead of the great deceiver and imposes artificial rules, laws and commands to accomplish its goals. The counterfeit system is based on force and fear and coercion while God's form of “government” is rooted in relationships linked with bonds of real love, selfless service and joyful community. The principles that “govern” all the universe far transcend just the spiritual dimension. What we have labeled as laws delivered by God throughout the ages are often simply revelations of innate principles of reality that have natural consequences both good and bad depending on how we cooperate or try to violate those principles.
But men's laws are based on the artificial system of government developed and refined by Satan, originally Lucifer who once was the closest created being in the whole universe to the throne and the mind of God. This angel is so well acquainted with the ways and truths about God that he is able to counterfeit them extremely convincingly and deceive many throughout the universe into thinking that his new ideas are superior to the ways of God that he considers too weak and too restricting.
In this context it is interesting to see the basic elements that will be involved in one of the final confrontations between the ways of God and the inventions of men following Satan's lead. One of the core beliefs promoted by the world is that community and success must be based on creating rules and laws that force everyone into conformity for the good of all. Law is considered the solution for nearly every problem in this world. But laws and regulations must be backed up by the threat of force through artificial means of enforcement in order to induce fear which is the primary emotion utilized to motivate all who are under the domination of Satan and his agents.
One thing I have noticed about the counterfeit system of law-dependence in this world is the ease with which laws can be enacted and changed on a whim. Laws are almost always created to promote the selfish interests of those in power and whenever another group of people achieve power they immediately follow the same pattern and use their position to impose their own will through laws on those around them.
Sadly, religious people have bought into this counterfeit way of thinking and viewing reality and are too ready with a great deal of condemnation and contempt for anyone who dares to challenge the whole concept of artificial law itself. As a result many people have come under criticism or have had their reputations maligned and destroyed by religious leaders and followers alike simply because they were trying to follow their conscience and the Spirit's leading in their life in contraflow to the imposed restrictions of laws and man-made rules. Religious people often have mistakenly believed that men's laws somehow carry a certain amount of divine weight and must be considered somewhat equal with the far greater principles of reality often referred to as God's laws.
Great wrongs have been committed and excused by following this kind of thinking. Christians under the reign of Hitler demanded that everyone should go along with his ideas and the laws he instituted because they were the rule of government and God commanded us to obey earthly authorities. This sort of logic has been repeatedly used all throughout history and is still very much in vogue today. However, the more I have contemplated and considered the ways and methods of God in relationship to His people the more I see the fallacy of this line of reasoning. On the surface it first appears to be very compelling, but upon closer examination I see that it is a very diabolical deception designed to control and suppress the true people of God by inducing fear and false guilt within their hearts to secure their compliance to men's artificial rule system of control.
So what does this have to do with flying? I think it has a great deal to do with it. For if my heart was designed to experience the thrill of uninhibited flight in dimensions far more important than just my physical body, and if that is God's real plan for my life, then I can be sure that the world's system is going to set itself up against the plans of God for His children and will employ anything and everything possible to prevent God's people from enjoying the freedom of the sons of God. And one of the methods that will be employed most is the full use of the artificial system of law with all its associated guilt, fear, condemnation and intimidation. It will culminate in the use of laws that will prevent God's people from participating at all in the economic system of the world which is another aspect of the counterfeit government that we live under.
Just as men create laws that prevent us from enjoying physical flight with freedom, so too are many of men's laws calculated to prevent us from flying in other dimensions of our life. So if I have a mindset that is controlled by the idea that men's laws are on a par with God's principles of creation and reality, then I am very vulnerable to the manipulation and inhibitions of the world designed to prevent me from following my heart in the ways God desires for me to do. I not only will be prevented from enjoying the thrill of physical flight on this earth but far more importantly I will remain grounded in my spirit and soul from following the lead of the Spirit of God in many other areas of my life.
Romans 8 tells me that those who are the real children of God will be led by the Spirit of God. But that leading will often put them at odds with the artificial restrictions of this world that are subtly designed to force us in a different direction. The tension between the world's system and the gentle, quiet leading of the Spirit will intensify until there will be a complete break between the two and the world will forcibly expel from society those who refuse to comply, they will be completely shut out of the world's sphere of privileges.
Those who have all their life served God from a spirit of fear, have tried to follow His “laws” from a spirit of duty and obligation rather than from a passion induced by and responding to His love for them, these will find it foreign to their thinking to break with their habit of obedience based on fear and will be overcome by the greater fear induced by the world's increasing threats against those who refuse to comply. But those who have been weaning themselves away from the counterfeit model of life on this earth and have instead invested their efforts toward intertwining their hearts with bonds of love and joy with the very heart of God will have a faith that will be found to be their vital link to the salvation provided for them by Jesus Christ. As Revelation puts it, they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. (Revelation 12:11)
Like the angels that they are listening to, they will have learned how to truly fly. For it is not just the words of the angels in Revelation that are significant to God's children but the example and demonstration of how to live life with joy, with fullness of heart, with loud shouts of praise and honor for their God - this is the example that those in tune with the heart and mind of God will learn to emulate. And as we learn to align our thinking and affections with the true ways of heaven we will find that we are in the midst of the greatest flying lessons we could ever imagine even right now. We will learn to fly so well that we will be prepared to fly away from this earth and join the angels in their joyful abandon of praise and song in devotion to the greatest Lover in the whole universe.

Three Dream Warnings
I had last night three series of dreams that at the present are somewhat baffling as well as disturbing. As soon as I sat down to write this after getting up this morning I got a call from my sister and before we hung up we discussed the possible reason for these dreams. She feels that this is a series of warnings to me to prepare me for whatever might be coming ahead.
The dreams seemed to fall into three distinct categories. The first had to do with immorality of a very intense nature. The second had to do with explicit violence at a very diabolic, evil level and the third involved spiritualism that connected with my emotions in a very surprising way.
The first dream that deeply disturbed me and that I have no desire to describe in detail had to do with explicit acts of moral abuse carried on by religious leaders of some sort. I was observing activity going on in front of me that was both reprehensible and at the same time strangely fascinating. It was evil of a nature that makes one's imagination want to feed on it in a spirit of judging similar to when people hear about sexual abuse by clergy. It is so easy to allow the imagination to begin to fabricate what might have happened and it simply begins to feed on itself in a sort of self-righteous indignation environment.
By the time I awoke enough to begin to come to my senses, quite literally, I realized that this was not just another dream because my imagination simply does not try to dwell on such things as I was observing in my dream. I then realized that this was more likely an assault from outside of me being artificially implanted into my mind by demonic instigation and I needed to turn to God for deliverance. As I cried out to God in my mind repeatedly, even forming the words with my mouth to externalize some of my prayers I began to get relief from the oppressive thoughts and feel more peace so I could go back to sleep.
But then I began to dream about a different kind of revolting evil, much more violent in nature. Part of it included visualizations of actual events that I had heard on the news a number of years ago where people were thrown out of military aircraft at night over the ocean because they were opposed to their government. As my mind recreated these scenes with again a fascination of horror, I realized once again that I was under assault and I had to pray my way out of this second round of dreams.
But then came another dream that completely caught me by surprise. I didn't recognize the setting from anything that I know about but it was some sort of farm located on a hillside with various buildings around. For some reason in the dream I knew as part of the dream that one of my sisters had recently died, though it is not actually true in real life. But in my dream this sister suddenly showed up to visit me and acted her usual self like nothing was amiss.
I was a little surprised and disconcerted but didn't do anything about it for awhile from simple politeness. But then our daughter's dog who in fact did die a few days ago in real life also showed up in the dream and was likewise acting like his usual self, jumping around with excitement to see me and wanting to jump up and sit on my lap.
At this point in the dream I needed to walk over to another building where other people were sitting around in a room if I remember right. At any rate, as I walked that direction and headed for a set of stairs, I was struggling with what to do about my “dead” sister walking along with me talking about what was going on in her life and family as she always has done and the dog who also had recently died running around wanting to play with me. Both of these I knew for a fact in my dream had already died and yet here they were as solid-looking and feeling as life and I agonized over confronting them to be apparitions as I knew they really were. My conscience told me that I needed to confront them as the demonic counterfeits that I knew them to be in my mind, but my emotions wanted desperately to just leave them alone and enjoy having them around for awhile because I knew that I would miss them and feel much more sad otherwise.
The internal struggle continued and intensified as I walked to the other building and started up the stairs. As I did so I heard someone nearby audibly tell me, “You know what you need to do, don't you?”
Yes, I knew what I was supposed to do, but my emotions were being drawn intensely in the opposite direction and were urging me to just wait a little longer so I could enjoy their company for awhile before I did what I was supposed to do. But then I also began to realize that this was really a trap designed to take advantage of my softer emotions and if I allowed the situation to continue I would quickly lose my ability to escape the control of the demonic spell. After that I would find myself enslaved in a satanic trap that would be far more difficult to escape.
At last I turned to my sister as tried to tell her apparition to leave saying, “In the name of Cr-cr-cr-cr--” But I struggled to even say the word. I realized by this time that the intensity of this temptation was far greater than I had estimated and that it was vital that I follow through on what was on my conscience. Finally I was able to say to her, “In the name of Christ Jesus I command you to leave.”
But the response was not as dramatic as the many stories I have heard growing up, partly because the demons probably knew they were still able to play on my sympathies and that I had a divided heart. So instead of disappearing into thin air as I had hoped, my “sister” began to act very hurt like I had just rejected her like so many other people have done all of her life. She slowly turned away in sorrow and began to walk in the other direction with me following her wondering what would happen next and trying to force myself to repeat the words again against all the desires of my emotions.
As she left, I turned to go up the stairs and the dog was still running and jumping around me and wanting to play and be close to me. I found this even harder to deal with, maybe because my mind knew that he really was dead in real life outside the dream. At any rate, as I tried to bring myself to confront this demonic apparition I collapsed on the stairs writhing in emotional pain and agony, crying and groaning with an intensity that I have not felt in a long time. At this point the enormity of the emotions woke me up again and I had to begin praying my way out of yet another dream while wondering what all of this was about.
I still don't know what it is all about, but like my sister told me this morning, it may possibly be a warning given to me by God in His mercy to prepare me for something coming ahead that no one knows about yet but Him. I pray that if this is true that I will have internalized the lessons needed from this warning so that I will be prepared for whatever it is that is coming.
I do sense that it is increasingly important to pay attention to the material that is allowed to feed my imagination and thoughts. Just listening to news broadcasts often implants images and thoughts and reactions that feed into these areas of evil unnecessarily all too often. I feel that God is calling out a people who will become more and more separated from the way the world thinks and operates and considers harmless and normal. I am particularly pricked by the high standard that I recently found in Isaiah 33:15 describing those who alone are fit to survive and thrive in the fiery presence of the Almighty. Maybe this is another wake-up call for my heart to more closely align with the ways and will of God in the kind of person I am becoming from the things I allow my mind and imagination to dwell on.

Intense Emptiness
Last night I had a series of some of the strangest dreams that I can remember. Of course, I can't remember but bits of most of them and they were so illogical that my logical mind simply can't relate to them enough to keep them in memory on that side of my brain. But I do remember at least one small piece of the end of one dream, not because of what happened, because I can't even remember the context, but because of the most intense emotion that I experienced for a few moments. It was so intense that I could not stay asleep until after I had been awake and lost the intensity and fell back asleep into a different dream.
As I said, I can't remember the reason or the context of the dream except that I sensed that it was an emotion of very intense – well, its even hard to describe an emotion with words – intense, maybe repentance, sorrow for my sinful condition, sadness for the condition of those around me, something along that line. At the same time I felt that I was very close to the presence of God while experiencing this intense emotion and felt something along the line of deep satisfaction at the same time. Actually, after I woke up from this most intense sensation I experienced something of an excitement that I had even dreamed such an emotion at all. I was actually almost relieved that I am still capable of having that emotion at that intensity. It was almost like I had a growing fear inside of me that my capacity for even experiencing certain emotions has nearly slipped away.
After waking up in the morning I thought about this some more and realized what most likely had caused it to happen. Since the main function of dreams is to file away the important events and emotions from the previous day into long-term memory, dreams often contain a strange mixture of whatever happened the previous day plus a large dose of whatever happens to leak out of the “file drawers” of the mind when they are opened to place within them the new additions to memory. As various sections of the mind are accessed to store away new memories, old events and emotions are reignited a little bit and mingle in with the new information to put them all together into the various emotional categories by which the brain indexes memories.
It has been observed by some researchers that our memories are usually filed and indexed according to emotional similarities, not by logical categories like we do in our intellectual world. That is why our brain is triggered by situations that subconsciously remind us of early intense experiences of a somewhat similar emotion. That early experience may not even look at all like the current situation we find ourselves in, but the emotion-index is not linked to logic but to the similarities in emotional content. And if any of those early events that are used to index all the rest of the file drawer are not resolved or contain deep-seated false assumptions or lies, they will act like a violent trigger to cause intense emotional reactions whenever they are touched by new but similar-feeling emotional stimulations.
Some of the recent developments in Christian ministry utilizes these principles of the mind in correlation with prayer and the presence of the Holy Spirit to bring resolution to those early problematic memories. This has resulted in bringing wonderful closure to not only the early memories but to all the ones linked to it throughout the rest of the life. This has been a great source of hope and excitement for many people as they have found incredible and almost unbelievable freedom from triggers that have enslaved and haunted them for many, many years. But what I believe is really happening is that we are finally learning enough about how God designed our brains to begin cooperating with God in its healing in more effective ways. Funny how when we learn to synchronize with true reality that things suddenly work so much more effectively.
Well, all that is simply background explanation for what I am trying to say about this intense emotion I experienced in my dream last night. As I thought about this while getting out of bed this morning it occurred to me that in a way I have almost become the person that I determined many years ago I did not want to become. Let me explain.
When I was in boarding school at around age 16 or 17 I remember coming to the realization that I was facing a major life decision about the kind of person I was going to become emotionally. I realized then that over a period of time I had become very hardened in my heart, in the emotional part of me, calloused to the point that I could no longer even feel awe or appreciation for a beautiful sunset or a colorful flower. Upon reflection I sensed that it was because I was quickly building emotional walls around my heart to keep me from being hurt by other people who had damaged or abused my heart, either intentionally or unintentionally. Nevertheless, because of my attempts to protect myself from further emotional pain I had begun to close myself away from access to others and was creating thick callouses around my inner self.
What alarmed me was that in doing so I also was sealing off my very ability to feel anything at all at a deep level. My emotions were trapped inside in order to prevent others from knowing about them and I was becoming a prisoner in my own cell that was originally designed to keep others out. I increasingly sensed that I had a choice to make about this situation that could potentially effect the course of the rest of my life.
I can remember lying on the grass with my fingers digging into the ground struggling with this decision trying to figure out what to do. A principle of reality emerged very clearly into my thinking that I still believe yet today. This maxim of truth says that a person can only experience, receive and appreciate love and related positive emotions to the same proportionate extent that the person is willing to make themselves vulnerable and open to being hurt or taken advantage of by others. Conversely, to the degree that I try to protect myself from being hurt inside I will also lose my ability to feel and connect with others at the heart level.
I clearly remember yet today that I made a very difficult choice at that time that I wanted to take the high road and to make myself more vulnerable so that I could also begin to enjoy life more. I think that was a very wise decision, but the problem is that over the many years since then I have had great difficulty knowing how to actually live out that choice. In spite of my good intentions I have repeatedly discovered myself back in my prison hiding in fear of pain and withdrawing from the withering emotional blows inflicted on me or even simple neglect by people who had access to my heart.
The result at this point in my life is that I have become a mixture of the results of decisions in both directions which does not make me feel very fulfilled or satisfied at the heart level. I feel like there have been times in my life when I made strong attempts to break out of my cell and have made some progress in that direction. However, overall I still feel very isolated at the heart level and feel very little emotional bonds with anyone which actually makes me a sitting target for the forces of evil if they were allowed more access to me. But I thank God that He has protected me thus far from those opportunities for Satan and God is still in charge of my healing process to prepare me emotionally for those assaults when they arrive.
Maybe it is extremely foolish to even disclose these things in public. I am sure many would insist that is true and maybe they are right, I don't know right now. What I do know is that when I got up this morning I had a deep sense that my emotional connectedness with others and my ability to feel emotions along with other people, particularly in their presence, is extremely limited and handicapped. I am very dissatisfied with the condition I find myself in which is revealed by my sense of relief last night that I can even feel the intense emotion that I did in my dream.
Upon reflection I remembered what happened yesterday that my brain was likely filing away that produced this strong sensation in the night. I was sharing with a friend about a book I had read years ago written by the man who played Jesus in the Matthew videos. It is called In the Footsteps of Jesus and the man's name was Bruce Marchiano whom I was privileged to meet in person later. I was describing to my friend how Bruce had spent days, maybe weeks pleading with God to give him a glimpse into the emotional mind of Jesus, to allow him to catch a perspective of how Jesus viewed reality and felt about the people around him. He wanted this experience and perspective so that he could more accurately portray the truth about Jesus as he acted out the various scenes from His life from the gospel of Matthew.
God answered his prayers at different times throughout the filming of this movie in ways that left Bruce permanently changed for the rest of his life. I as related these stories to my friend I suddenly found myself tearing up with emotion myself and realized that the ability to feel the passion of God like Bruce longed to do is also one of the deepest desires of my own inner being. All of my life I have longed to be a passionate person in a positive way, to be able to be expressive and intense and connected with others and still to be able to return to a “normal” emotional state of peace without feeling stuck in any particular difficult emotion.
As I have been listening again to the Joy Bonds series by Jim Wilder over the past few days I have been reminded of how out of sync I am with God's desires for my life that He implanted deep within me from before I was even born. My dissatisfaction with my present condition seems to be growing and I long more intensely to be a person that I currently am not. I have for many years felt secretly jealous of those who were able to be expressive seemingly without inhibitions. Some of those have used that ability to really mess up their lives and I certainly do not wish to imitate their example in that direction. But, as I was telling my friend yesterday, I have met a small handful of people over my life that I immediately sensed were living their life deeply from their heart. They seemed to have a very open, vital connectedness with God's heart, they seemed to live with transparency that felt compelling and their presence felt like a powerful magnet in contrast to my sense of emptiness. I felt a great urge each time I met someone like this to rush up to them and beg them to give me whatever it was they had if that was possible.
I firmly believe that this is the proper way to “conduct” evangelism as God originally intended it to happen. Evangelism today has evolved into something completely different that I don't even want to discuss right now. But whenever people get around someone who is real, who reflects from an open heart the intensity of God's passion reflected through their life, their body language, their spirit and their very atmosphere, the attractiveness of God becomes so much more clear and the Spirit of God seems to be able to draw people to Jesus in ways that most evangelists only dream of accomplishing. The real question is, how do I get there from here?
I have no clue as to the answer to that question except to intensify my pursuit of God even more. But I am convinced that God is the originator of that desire in my heart and He also has the answer for it. I likely won't be able to figure out the answer myself, but if I keep focused on pursuing His heart, of seeking His face as He has invited me to do, that somehow, someday I will experience what my heart was designed to experience I sense that this is the only thing that can really make me feel truly alive and that can make my heart thrive. Last night was just a momentary taste of what I want my whole life to be like. I want to be consumed with the passion of God's heart and be swallowed up in His obsession for drawing everyone possible into the powerful current of His most intense love.
Right now I can only dimly sense the outlines of a little bit of this. But I ask Him to come into my life in a much more intentional and direct way and transform me into the kind of man He designed for me to become. I am tired of living life without passion. I know I have a lot of healing to take place to make me safer to live in that kind of intensity, but I want to progress faster than I have in the past. I leave it in God's hands to lead me into that path when He knows I am ready. And in the meantime I have to trust His heart and His timing to get me ready for the exciting life that I know He has planned for me. I have missed far too much of it already and I am impatient to move ahead closer to the real source of safe passion, of real love, of emotional fulfillment and of deep, open connectedness within the true body of Christ.
Jesus, please do Your thing in my life as soon as possible. Thank-you for promising to always be with me for that is the joy that is my strength. I trust You to accomplish Your longterm plan in my life. Teach me how to cooperate better with You. Make me a flaming torch of Your passion to attract others who are starving for real life and satisfaction to come to You for healing and wholeness. Fill me with Your Spirit and have Your way in my life today and for the rest of my life, for Your name's sake, for Your reputation's sake.

Fire, Fear and Real Power
Sometimes my dreams give me clues as to what my subconscious is doing out of sight. I am usually rather cautious about drawing hard conclusions from dreams as they can often be rather fickle and easily affected by things like what you ate the night before etc. My Dad used to say that if you wanted to have a lot of dreams then just eat mashed potatoes before going to bed.
Well, I didn't eat mashed potatoes last night but I did eat a little ice cream which also can have rather strong effects on my sleeping at times. I often wake up literally dripping with sweat in the middle of the night after eating ice cream which gives me quite a strong incentive to avoid doing that. I did wake up last night with a little bit of that but not the full blown version. But I'm not sure how much effect that had on the dream that I had earlier this morning that also woke me up and nearly ended my ability to sleep the rest of my alloted time.
I dreamed that things were getting very dangerous in the world and somehow our house and belongings were reduced to shambles. We were hiding out in lower parts of the house and beginning to search for food in the wreckage while also aware that everyone else was in a state of very heightened distrust of everyone else. During this time I also became aware that some of those I loved and considered part of my family were willing to betray me if the opportunity afforded itself.
At some point in the dream we decided that it was time to leave the area and somehow were going to use our car to drive away. (I don't know where the gas was going to come from.) We hardly started to leave when sure enough we were stopped by an impromptu check-point set up by people in the neighborhood and our car was searched for anything valuable, especially food. I recognized the loved ones I knew in the group and things went from bad to worse at this point.
For whatever reason (dreams seldom follow logic or consistency) the next thing I knew gasoline was being poured on my body and I could feel the burning sensation of it on my skin. I could see my wife and young children looking on with horror and I wondered what was going to happen next. At this point the dream begin to slow down – probably because I was starting to wake up and interfere with the flow of the dream – and I wondered if the gas was just to irritate me or if they planned to turn me into a lighted torch. When the dream got to this point I finally woke up fully with all sorts of fear and questions filling my mind and emotions.
As I have learned to do over the past few years when attacked by strong fears, I began to talk with God about my fears and present them to Him to take them from me and replace them with peace and calm. I prayed for His perspective about the situation and about these people and also remembered that praise, gratitude and focusing on the goodness of God and on His covenant promises are very effective weapons against fear. As I did so I found my emotions beginning to find relief and I continued to push my heart to focus on God and the good things I have been learning about Him over the past few years.
I realized in the process that this was the very same situation that every martyr for Jesus has found themselves in and what I was doing was also the secret weapon that they used when facing fear of death. Instead of allowing the fear to overwhelm them they positively displaced all fear by filling their minds and hearts with the presence of God and some of them are even reported to have died singing long after it was reasonable physically possible.
I pondered whether I should get up or if I should try to finish out the night's sleep that was so intensely interrupted. I finally drifted off back to a much more peaceful sleep and found myself dreaming something almost the very opposite to what had previously occurred. I found myself sharing with a small group of young people what I was learning inductively from a passage in the Bible and encouraging them to process through the verses like I do to discover the connections and the exciting truths that could transform their own lives.
As I was doing this I became suddenly overwhelmed with such a powerful, stirring inspiration of God from the passage to my own heart that I could hardly continue to speak. I began seeing connections in the verses and thrilling revelations of God's passion and love and truth and I eagerly tried to get the others to see them for themselves and feel it with their own hearts, not just their intellect. The whole experience became almost supernatural and my heart was intensely warmed and excited with the opportunity to share and enjoy the very presence and power of the love of God.
When I woke up again about half an hour before our normal time to get up I again lay there talking with God and asking what He wanted me to do today. My plans have been changed radically several times and right now I still have little idea what I will be doing today. But I believe God may have something specific in mind and I want to be in His will wherever that needs to happen today.
But as I prayed my mind also became filled with fast-moving insights about the nature of the great war we are caught up in between God and His archenemy, the accuser. I sensed in a very strong way that the sharpest conflict is between the forces of fear and the power of pure love. My mind seemed to be presented with story after story from the Bible and other places in history to illustrate this and it became very clear that in each story the choice was always between becoming intimidated and subjected to the control of fear or turning the mind deliberately to seek God's face and focus on Him instead.
I pondered for awhile what must have gone on in the thinking of the three Hebrews who ended up in the fiery furnace. They had no assurance that things would work out as they did but they showed unflinching calm and resolution to stick with God at any cost. But this was not due to some super-human ability to grit their teeth and win this stand-off with guts, courage and sheer spiritual determination. That is a sure recipe for experiencing a spectacular meltdown in front of God's enemies.
It occurred to me that these men did not face this decision suddenly as the story might imply to some people from the way it is sometimes told. There was quite a long period of time required for building this giant statue and the furnaces were not exactly built out of sight either. In addition, the attitude of the king was also quite apparent to anyone paying attention at all and it was becoming increasingly clear what his intentions were the closer they got to the great time of forced worship.
So during all these months leading up to this confrontation with the king's demands, the three men had time to consider what their attitude was going to be. They must have known that they would certainly face the fire if they choose to hold to their allegiance to the God who loved them so much. They had literally months to pray and seek God's face and focus their hearts on Him on a daily basis which likely was the real preparation that empowered them to stand with quiet boldness when the time finally arrived for the great showdown. By that time their minds and hearts were so obsessed with the beauty and attractiveness of God's character and His ways that all fear had been banished from their hearts and they were able to face the possibility of torture in the flames without flinching.
By that time it was crystal clear to them that the real issue here was not just about worship but was about whether fear and force would be the controlling, dominating power in their lives or whether the goodness and grace and glory of the true God would so fill their lives and minds that everything else sank into insignificance. For fear cannot be countered with more fear but has to be displaced with genuine love and the true glory found only in God's face.
As I thought about these things it permeated deeper into my heart and mind the clarity of the issues in this great controversy. Fear itself is my greatest enemy and is the primary tool used against me to keep me from having a saving connection with my real Father in Heaven, my Creator who longs to bring me back home to be enthralled with His love for eternity.
Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us. (1 John 4:15-19)

Enslaved by Straw
But then something unusual interrupted the flow of this repetitive dream that caused me to wake up a little bit. It was like a message from heaven, though I also realize that it was linked to something I heard Shane Claiborne say from the recording of a fascinating discussion I recently downloaded from Amercian Public Media. The message was that I should not be so obsessed with wanting a license with my picture on it issued by the government because what it really is in heaven's eyes is the badge of a stolen identity.
Shane was referring to the story when Jesus was confronted by the Pharisees about paying taxes to Caesar. The answer He gave was that Caesar could have his money back that had Caesar's picture stamped on it but that he had no ownership over people because they were created with the image of God imprinted in them. In my dream I sensed that this issue went even deeper but along the same line of reasoning.
Society today is all astir and agitated about identity theft and many people are becoming somewhat paranoid and obsessive about trying to hide or destroy anything that might be used to find out any details about themselves. The media keeps this fear very much alive by pushing stories of people's lives “ruined” because of identity thieves finding their social security number, credit card numbers etc. So people are buying paper shredders and sharing stories of phone cameras taking pictures of their credit cards and generally increasing the level of stress in people's hearts to an even higher level of worry. Sometimes I wonder if the identity that they are trying to hide from everyone else is really all that much worth protecting. But that is partly another but related issue.
Identity theft is really a situation where a person gets enough information about another person to convince a business or public service to extend credit to them or sell them goods based on the numbers and names they provide. It can certainly have a devastating effect on a persons credit history which seems rather difficult to reverse even though it was quite easy to accept false charges in the first place. It seems a little baffling that credit agencies have little trouble adding problems to a person's credit history but seem rather resistant to just as easily believe the truth from the actual person trying to rectify the situation.
Identity theft does certainly create a great deal of frustration and problems for people who are victimized by it and many times the long-term effects are never completely erased. There always seems to be a cloud of doubt left over a person's reputation even though they had nothing to do with the original problem. But what does all this have to do with the identity theft that I am referring to as seen from heaven's eyes?
God is extremely protective about the “currency” called humans that He created with His picture on them. In addition, and quite unlike our currency which is not backed up by anything whatsoever of worth, the currency that God created has infinite value that is very real and tangible. The pledged value of every human being is literally backed by the life of the Son of God and He was willing to put it on the table when the value of His “currency” was called into question. Because of this, God and all of heaven is very keen to protect the identity of the people that bear the stamp of heaven.
But Satan has invented a very complex and massive counterfeit currency system along with a counterfeit of God's government and this can easily be seen in the way earthly governments operate. This is not just some theory or a religious notion that is irrelevant to our life right now. This is very real and presents a problem that most people are completely unaware of but affects their lives pervasively. One of the big issues in Satan's counterfeit system reflects his desire to literally steal the identities that God gave us and to replace them with counterfeit identities that we have come to believe is our real identity.
Think carefully about these words of Jehovah spoken from the flames and smoke and thunder on Mount Sinai thousands of years ago revealing the fundamental truths about God and reality.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: (Exodus 20:4 KJV)
You are not to make an image or picture of anything in heaven or on the earth or in the waters under the earth: (Exodus 20:4 BBE)
I understand that some people have taken this to mean that we should never engage in photography of any kind because this might be breaking the Law of God. I am not going to tackle that issue because I believe that God is far more concerned with issues of the heart. On the other hand, the things we do externally usually reflect the realities that are believed at the heart level and so the things we consider important and give great value to reveal what we actually believe about our own identity.
I am just starting to sense after this dream that quite possibly our society's belief, being intensified lately by increasing pressure from the government, that we have to be obsessed with our external identity and are fully responsible for it in some way. This notion itself is a means of making us participates in the theft of our own true identity. We may actually be discovered to be co-conspirators in the attempt by the world to set up an alternative identity in order to obliterate our awareness of our true and far more valuable identity entrusted to us by our original Creator. And part of this identity theft is the use of an identity card carrying a requisite image of our faces on it as an attempt to give a face to this false identity.
Some have learned that this false identity is well known in higher government circles and the fraud is strongly promoted there but not revealed to the average person. Millions are led to believe that this is just that way we have to cooperate in order to get along in this society. That may be true if we are willing to be a cooperative accomplice in our own identity theft. But I am beginning to see that this may not be viewed with favor from heaven's perspective.
In some circles this false image fabricated to replace us is called our “straw man”. For those of you not yet familiar with this term and still uneducated as to what is going on behind the scenes, your straw man is the composite identity that is created by the government at the time of your birth and introduced by your birth certificate. It's name is usually spelled in all capital letters on government records and increasingly more and more of your personal information is being collected to add to the government database being compiled on you.
But what is often seriously misunderstood is that this straw man identity is not the same person as the “human flesh and blood you” that God created in His image. It is a fictional entity that is also classified as a corporation so that the IRS can then claim that “you” owe them taxes. The IRS has absolutely no jurisdiction over sentient human flesh and blood beings in the various States of the united States of America – no one has ever been able to produce the law requiring humans to pay taxes on the money they earn from their labor. (If you can find it you can collect a $10,000 dollar reward) But the IRS does have the ability to tax corporations. Therefore it is imperative that they deceive everyone into believing that they are the fictional corporate “person” created by the government at their birth so that all their life they will assume that they are required to return taxes.
There are many elements that go into making up this fictional straw man that goes by the same-sounding name as that given to you by your parents. The Social Security number assigned to your fictional person is a key element in tracking and compiling all the information possible to add to the identity and value of this fictional straw man. And now it has been enacted by Congress that every person must procure a high security I.D. card, generally in the form of a driver's license, that will soon become the control point for the government to manipulate all of your behavior and access to most anything a person wants to do to interrelate with others around them.
The false, counterfeit governments of earth are doing everything possible to obliterate our perception of our true identity in order to keep us fixated with our fictional identity and believe that our straw man is our real identity. Very many people have already been quite convinced of this ruse and are even ready to commit suicide against their God-given body and soul whenever their fictional person gets into deep trouble. Tragically, what they do not realize is that the fictional person has very little to do with their real identity and their belief that it does is only a false belief, not a fact. But a falsehood believed has the same effect internally as if it were true if it is not exposed and rejected.
So I am starting to see that the urgency of my mind during my dream to think that I must have a driver's license with an image (idol) of my face on it in order to live a normal life is really in opposition to the second commandment in the Law of God. For me to buy into the belief that my identity is composed of my license, my credit records, my bank statements, my work history etc. is to accept the assertion that the false identity created in my image is in fact the real me. This is, in fact, another revelation of my false belief that my value is determined by my performance and my reputation in contradiction to the opinion of my Maker. It is to confirm what Satan is hoping I will believe and to subject myself to all the manipulations that correspond to being the slave that the straw men was created to be for the use of the state.
A most important verse precedes what we usually think of as the Ten Commandments and if it is overlooked we completely miss the context and power of those Revelations of God. Then God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me." (Exodus 20:1-3) If I do not believe in my heart that I am not a slave, that my real identity is not tied to a fictional person created by the State; if I do not truly believe in my heart that I have been set free from the godlessness represented by Egypt and am no longer a slave to be manipulated and controlled by those slave-masters, then I will be vulnerable to the stresses and fears, terrors and intimidations promoted and rehearsed by those masters and will remain a slave to be continually abused by them. And I will not be free to obey the perfect Law of Liberty. (James 1:25)
If I accept the assumptions about my identity by the media and the government in their communications to me as fact, then I will believe their assertion that I am still a slave and will continue to act like one. In doing so I will have accepted the replacement of my true, God-imparted identity (which I may have never even known) with the false, stolen identity that has usurped my position in life and robbed God of His purchased property. I will live in fear under the threats and intimidations of these earthly slave-masters and will be controlled by other's false assertions about me instead of living in the freedom purchased for me by Jesus Christ.
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. Counterfeit Integrity
I had a dream of being caught in the largest pile up on a freeway that I can ever imagine. It involved almost exclusively semi-trucks that were crashed into various buildings, each other or just caught in the tangle at all sorts of angles and various degrees of damage. Some of them were crushed quite badly and others were not damaged very much at all. There were at least dozens of them if not hundreds, but I could not tell from where I was because the area in which I found myself on the roadway was completely blocked in by trucks all around me and I could not see anything beyond them except maybe some of the surrounding buildings.
As usual, I don't remember some of the details of what happened early on in the dream but I do remember how the dream evolved in my perceptions over time. In particular, I remember one trailer that was broken open and there being containers of food lying on the truck-bed such as yogurt and cans of juice. (Nothing to do with buying several containers of yogurt a couple nights ago?) I remember there being a strong insistence by the driver of the truck that everyone should respect the rules of honesty and should not open or utilize the containers for themselves but should help transfer them to a cold room nearby for better storage. A number of us were involved in helping him out with this transfer.
I also remember looking around with awe at all the damage and beginning to wonder how long it was going to take us to get out of this mess. It was becoming increasingly clear that it might take days to unravel the gigantic pile-up enough to even reach us and open a way for us to get out from amid all the wrecks. But for awhile I was more interested in just gawking at the wrecked vehicles than I was worried about our long-term prospects.
But later in the dream I began to realize that the people who were trapped here with us were going to need to eat and that this rule about respecting the ownership of this food was in direct conflict with the needs of people to survive. This tension became very intense in my mind in a very short time so much so that it woke me up and I lay wide awake wondering why I again had to wake up so early after going to be late after a long road trip home. I lay there and pondered to possible purpose of this intense dream and suddenly more things began coming sharply clear to my mind. I felt so compelled by them that I could no longer feel safe to sleep longer without losing important things that I wanted to remember.
What suddenly became crystal clear to me was the sharp tension between the priority of rules above that of relationships. I remembered the many illustrations of this from stories that occur in war-times by those we later consider to be heroes. But at the time they are seldom viewed as such. They are usually considered to be traitors and violators of the law by the people in control and they are usually threatened with severe punishments for breaking the law.
Then another word came to my mind and I realized that this word has sharply different meanings dependent on what one believes about what is proper priorities in life. That word is “integrity”. In my dream the cold food laying in the truck became to issue around which conflicting concepts of integrity came to a head. While the driver was trying to keep others from eating so it could be repacked in the name of honesty and integrity, others were becoming hungry and the reality of the situation (depending on what one views as reality) pointed to the need for something at odds with what appeared to be honest. At first it seemed the right thing to do to respect the private ownership of the food, but then it was becoming obvious that likely the food would go to waste before it could ever be moved on and in the meantime many might become very hungry while being denied access to food right in front of them – all in the name of honesty and integrity.
It began to dawn on me that rules were being made more important than lives, that the food would spoil anyway and the people that were trapped in here needed to eat. There was an emerging clarity to the tension between integrity being defined under the false definition of keeping rules or integrity being that of looking out for others in humane way.
This has been the tension that has always emerged in crisis situations and creates confusion in the minds of many and long, heated debates about what constitutes proper ethics. What became clear to me was that it is really the titanic clash between the world's system of control and governance and heaven's methods of looking out for others ahead of one's self or even of keeping rules. The latter is the model that Jesus demonstrated and that riled all those who considered rules as more important to God than relationships. These kind of people may believe that relationships are important but that rules always trump relationships. If there is a problem in relationships then the rules just need to be tweaked some more because at root it is believed that somehow we can achieve just the right formula of rules to make everything work out right for relationships.
But rules are too artificial and inflexible and completely lack the ingredient of spirit. So rules can never accommodate to new and unforeseen situations in a crisis because the “right” thing to do will always vary from one situation to the next. The only real rules that really work are rules – really principles – concerning the spirit, not the externals.
When rules are oriented toward the externals they nearly always reflect the counterfeit government that is set up in opposition to God's government. The two systems are incompatible though it often is attempted to make them mesh. This is due to the deceptive nature of the counterfeit system which has always led us to believe that if tweaked enough the rule of law will achieve better results than God's ways. Rule-based living is really a false god that we worship and give allegiance to in preference to trusting the Spirit of the real God to lead us in right ways in every situation.
Rule-worshipers accuse those of being led by the Spirit of believing in “situation ethics”. By this they imply that it is immoral to perceive right and wrong based on flexible guidelines. In fact, the very notion of flexibility in definitions of right and wrong is horrifying and blasphemous to them. It strikes at the very foundation of their god of law and can never be tolerated. Any talk of such notion is considered very dangerous and heretical at best and is ultimately considered so dangerous as to sometimes deserve the elimination of those who promote such thinking so as to not contaminate the rest of the world with their dangerous heresies.
Think about the many stories that emerge from times of chaos, war and calamities. The one recurring theme is the increased tension between the definitions of what is “right”. But often rules are deliberately put into place to increasingly impose an atmosphere designed to dismantle relationships and separate people from bonding correctly. I wonder if that is not one of the subtle, deceptive problems of rule-based thinking fundamentally. Rules are inherently designed to promote fear and bond people together by the use of fear. Law, economics and kingship are primarily aimed at disassembling love bonded relationships and establishing relationships based on fear. Fear-based relationships can sometimes look positive and very deceiving and appear to create real unity, joy and peace. But they will always be counterfeit because of the underlying bond used to keep people in that unity. And these relationships will always be in tension opposed to the kind of relationships God intends for us to enjoy.
This also emerges in the definitions we give to words like “heroes”, “winners”, “champions” and even “overcomers”. Today's media is devoted to filling our minds with false and mixed illustrations of what the lives of these kind of people should look like. It is believed that our heroes must always mix some degree of selfish motives and sinful activities in with noble and loving relationships to come up with something so emotionally compelling that we are led to believe that our lives will be fulfilled if we make similar choices based on similar mixed motives and activities. Very seldom is a person portrayed in movies as being desirable based on completely selfless choices in view of heaven's definition of integrity.
But here it becomes even more murky. For in a crisis the false system switches tactics and employs situational ethics (as the world designed them) and appears to make relationships more important than rules in order “to deceive the very elect”. Rules of morality are then abandoned and whatever feels good at the moment is indulged in for the sake of following lust – for power, for sexual pleasure, for personal survival, etc. – and fulfilling relationships are portrayed as the indulgence of romantic attractions that seldom have any negative consequences. Selfish exploitation of others for pleasure or power (which is usually portrayed as pleasing to everyone involved) is romanticized and glorified in most of the media and this false god is exalted as the superior model to that of God's ways of selfless servant relationships. But the consequences can always be massaged in the pretend world of movies and music and even the news and so the real results of sin are masked under the guise of pleasure and endings of “living happily ever after”. These kind of relationships are touted as the model for others to follow but they do not work out that way in real life because they are based on selfish desires instead of selfless love for others in a context of keeping heaven's perspective of reality.
There is a time when rules must have apparent priority over “relationships” in heaven's model of governance. But it is not really as it appears at first, for when more carefully examined it still puts true, love-based relationships above arbitrary law. For the rules that take priority in heaven's kingdom are principles that reinforce true relationships, not preempt them. The kind of laws that govern heaven are spirit-oriented laws that external in their results, not in their foundations. Heaven's laws are far more flexible than we believe they are from our human, distorted perspective confused by the deceptions of human legal mentality. Because heaven's laws are not externally based they do not attempt to define or micromanage every situation from an external perspective but are designed to govern the heart and the motives so that the heart and motives will then be free and empowered to interpret the best way to externalize those principles in any given situation.
In reality, God's system is something like situational ethics, but is not the counterfeit that Satan invented that discredits that phrase. The counterfeit principle makes morality the variable and selfish pleasure or exploitation the fixed standards. God's true principle of “situational ethics” makes moral integrity in the heart and loyalty to God and selfless love the fixed, inflexible factors and external behavior the variable.
This is why so many teachings of Jesus sometimes seem baffling and cause many Christians to try to rationalize and explain away some of His statements. Because some of the things Jesus taught are in tension with rule-based religion people feel compelled to explain them away or reinterpret them turning them into even more rules according to the world's model of externalized religion. We talk about internalizing the rules as if that is God's plan but what we are really often saying is more along the line of forcing ourselves and others to memorize rules so that they will govern our behavior through internalized fear, guilt and shame. There is no freedom in this kind of living though from the world's viewpoint there appears to be great freedom. For freedom is yet another word with two definitions.
In the world's system freedom is viewed from an external perspective as is everything else in the counterfeit world in which we live. So if a person is not forced into a prison and has relative freedom of physical autonomy they are considered to have freedom. Notice what is implied in all the talk about freedom from our political leaders today. As long as you comply with the myriads of rules (that are ever expanding, conflicting and restrictive), you will supposedly be left relatively free to make personal choices within those ever-tightening borders – and that is labeled as freedom. But we sense that there is something inherently no right about this definition but we cannot seem to figure it out until nearly all of our freedoms have been stolen away from us by the very ones claiming to protect them for us, and it is too late to then get them back. Freedom is supposedly “defended” by the use of force which itself is the very opposite of true freedom. But freedom achieved by fear and force is not real freedom but is an illusion that leads into ultimately the most abject slavery while blindly marching its followers in time to the songs of “freedom” drummed out by our culture and its leaders.
God's freedom does include external freedom of movement, choice and autonomy. But it is a freedom that is based on unselfishness and a total absence of coercion, threats or intimidation. God's freedom is based on the internalization, not of external-oriented rules and formulas but the principles of thinking and motivation on which all of true reality is based and in which were were designed to thrive and bond with others. These principles are not left-brain based definitions and restrictions by which we are to formulate controlled behavior but are cause and effect principles of the heart that only function correctly while staying in vital connection with its Source of guidance and joy.
The Holy Ghost is the greatest promoter of situational ethics and as such is likely the greatest source of irritation to religious people everywhere, even many of those who claim to be filled with the Holy Ghost. God's Spirit is the only reliable source of knowing what the “right” thing to do is in any given situation and that may look very different for different people or different circumstances. But it will always be in perfect harmony with the fundamental principles described in God's Word and the foundational characteristics of God Himself. But these principles are impossible to condense into external formulas that can then be used in place of continual guidance by the Holy Spirit. For formulas can never replace the function of the Spirit in guiding us into all truth.
That word too, is another word with double meanings. Truth in the realm of external religion is considered primarily “correct” facts, doctrines and refined formulas and theological propositions designed to create “correct” outward conformance to externalized descriptions of what a “good” person should look like. And a “good” person will always be one who, above all keeps the law and obeys the (external) commandments of God. While it is true that a good person will indeed keep the commandments of God, the way that behavior is produced is vastly different than the path laid out and prescribed by most people claiming to understand religion and the Bible. It is a classic case of making the symptoms the driving priority instead of giving priority to the causes which are impossible to regulate through external methods. Because of the inability for external controls to regulate the heart motivations Christianity as devolved into primarily an externally defined system of working very hard to achieve lives that approximate the descriptions given in the Bible of what is righteous. We fall for trust in control. We fall deep into the deceptive trap of trying to live our life backwards, focusing more on the externals and then living in increasing frustration because the externals are so difficult to manage and control with the tools we are trying to use.
In the kingdom of heaven truth has a very different meaning than used in external religion. While it is true that truth can be somewhat described in the results seen in the external life of a true Christian, those manifestations and descriptions (what others view as obedience to law) are only externalized symptoms of a much deeper – I can't even find an appropriate word for this – element, ingredient, character motivation, than anything known by external religion. Real truth is not abstract and left-brain based but is a vibrant, interactive, dynamic, vital and flexible relationship with the Source of real truth, life and freedom. Truth might better be analogized by the idea of a flexible power cord that connects a computer into its source of electricity – but even more than that. Truth requires something of a data flow through that cable, and yet even more than data because data again implies left-brain, cognitive facts, and truth is far more than facts. Our connection with the Spirit is like a virus checker as well as a constant source of wisdom to test all spirits. Truth is fundamentally a relationship far more than it is a collection of ideas.
During the life of Jesus this issue of how to define truth was a constant source of tension and conflict that swirled around the presence of Jesus wherever He went. It culminated in the famous question by Pilate, “What is truth?”, very near the end of His life shortly before He was crucified. Jesus was crucified because of people who just like us claimed to know and have more truth than anyone else on earth. Externalized truth will always ultimately set itself up against God because God will never be able to fit into the parameters of how we define truth as based on external measurements. Any box we create claiming to use the restrictions we often call truth will sooner or later have to be shattered by the God who is too big to fit in any such containers.
But that does not mean it is right for us to shatter the containers that God creates for us and defines as truth. Because our minds operate far more in the logical realm and perceive reality – at least this side of eternity – from our limited abilities and definitions, God uses intellectual means of defining truth using legal terms and restrictions that we need to respect and utilize to keep us in proper relationship with Him until we are mature enough and safe enough to synchronize more fully with His heart.
But this does not mean that this is the goal of God for our lives or that we are to deify the restrictions that He has given to keep us safe until we are grown up. Paul makes it very clear in Romans and many other places that the law was only given as a stop-gap slave-master to keep us out of undo trouble until we could mature enough to live in proper relationship to the Source of all truth. That relationship itself is the real truth that trumps the somewhat artificial “truth” perceived in the law, and we are to always be moving toward the relationship much more than toward the law which is being superseded. To continue to keep ourselves bound to rules and formulas as the ideal life God designed for us is to insist on remaining in infant maturity and demanding that anything beyond that is heresy and is against God's will.
We utilize rules and silly restrictions for our babies and small children to protect them from dangers beyond their understanding and to help them learn basic concepts of how to live life in self-control when they have more capacity. But if they were to refuse to ever grow past their simplistic, rule-based, infant-relationship with us and were to forever remain dependent on us like that for the rest of their lives we would be failures as parents (although I know of parents who continue to relate to their children into adulthood using this model). Parents who do keep their children in total dependency on them are usually those who have personally bought into the religion of externals taught by many conservatives and have carried it out to its logical extremes.
God, thank-you again for making this a little bit more clear to me. I know that I am very slow to grow and embrace the flexible, dynamic life of continuous interaction with You that You so much desire for me. I still have so many fear bonds created by rule-based religion. That is almost all I have ever known and it seems so difficult to shift my many paradigms to live the way You are revealing to me. It is also in direct conflict with what many around me insist is true who claim to know truth much better than I, and so there is always tension between what You are showing me and what others insist that I believe.
Father, continue to teach me Your ways and fill me with Your ever-current presence. You are the God who can live simultaneously in the past, future and present with complete ease, but I must remember to live more consistently in the present in constant awareness of Your presence for guidance. I know from the past that when I live this way You are faithful to guide my spirit and impress me with Your wisdom in every situation. As I fill my mind and heart more thoroughly with Your Word and allow more access to Your Spirit I become more clear in my perceptions and more easily sense Your voice. Fill me today with Your Spirit and empower me to be a clear channel of encouragement, strength, hope and faithful love to those You have waiting for me today. Make me an efficient conduit of Your power into other lives today for Your reputation's sake. Reveal Your glory more fully today through my life so that others will be compellingly attracted to Your beauty and allurements and will release the lies about You that prevent their hearts from trusting You fully.

Choir of my Dreams
A had one of those rare dreams last night that I deeply regretted waking up from. Then I wanted to get up and try to write it down before it was gone even though it was around 1 AM but much of it faded from memory in a short time. I suppose the one reason for that is that it was more of an emotional dream than it was a factual one. What made it so intense (besides the presence of unusual herbs and flavors from the Japanese meal last night) was that it seems to be a very strong message from very deep in my psyche of long-lost, unfulfilled longings and desires. It seemed to last for quite an extended period. What I can remember is the general gist and outline of the events and feelings, particularly the overwhelming emotion that I had that woke me up.
It seemed to begin when I was enjoying a visiting academy school choir performing music that I really liked. They did not seem to be people that I knew particularly but I just remember enjoying the music very much. After that I must have followed them from place to place to continue listening to their various concerts and selections. It also seems there was quite a variety of outfits that they wore as well as music that they presented. You know how dreams can be, not necessarily logical in sequence or substance so many of the connecting details were not present.
Over time my emotional attachment to this group began to grow very strong even though they did not know me very well. It seems that I began to mingle with them in other activities such as in the dorm, during practices etc. I wish that I could remember more but the details have so escaped me. What I do remember was the last scene where I found myself slowly walking down a hallway next to the practice area looking over the music they were preparing for the next concert but more focused on my intense emotions than on the music. At this point I must have been invited to be an assistant director of the choir but the decision was not yet final or maybe was contingent on the members acceptance of me or whatever.
What I do know is that the combination of the powerful effect that the music had on my soul and the intense desire I had in my heart to be accepted and wanted by these friendly, fun-loving young people, my deepest longings to be a part of what was happening here were greater than I can remember experiencing for most of my life. I was suddenly aware that there was an extremely deep reservoir of hunger, a desire for satisfaction that had never been met, dreams long forgotten that had never been realized that lay dormant in my heart. As I walked down that hallway intensely hoping to be fully embraced and loved and included by this exciting group of vibrant young people, the tears began to well up in my eyes. Then I was challenged by the usual confrontation of emotions about whether I should allow my feelings to be visible to others or should repress them or hide them as I usually do. As I considered this I decided that it would make more sense to try to let my emotions be seen, to be real if I wanted them to accept me.
I found myself a little frustrated that the young people talking, laughing and singing next to me were not noticing my emotions and asking me what was going on. They were understandingly too preoccupied with each other to notice me as I continued to slowly walk down the hall. It seemed that my opportunity was about to slip away which only intensified my desire. Then the worst tragedy of all took place – I began to wake up slowly and I began to realize that it really was only a dream. I desperately tried to return to the dream and stay asleep, but as is usually the case, the harder you try to stay asleep the quicker you wake up simply from the infusion of left-brain logic that disrupts the atmosphere conducive to the dream.
So I was left laying there contemplating the remnants of the dream and its emotions and wondering what it might mean, if anything. I asked God if there was some meaning or possible indication of a future event in this dream but heard no clear response. So I just pondered why I felt so strongly about it. The only clear ideas that emerged were that it was clearly a message from areas of my heart that had not been heard from in many years. In a way that might be good in that my attempts to listen to my heart more lately are starting to allow it to communicate more, albeit very timidly.
Another frightening message is that I may be far more vulnerable to heart-oriented surprise attacks than I ever dreamed possible. Like the explanation that I heard from Jim Wilder about why so many prominent preachers who are very experienced and knowledgeable are suddenly tripped up in moral failure. He points out that the knowledge does very little to prevent they collapse because the real problem lies in the lack of joy relationships in their life. So when someone comes along who suddenly fills forgotten but very intense longings hidden deep in their hearts that they were not even aware of, they are very easily unbalanced and dislodged from all the professions and religious claims they have publicly stood on for so many years. They painfully realize that they have masked over and ignored their heart in their lifelong struggle for intellectual knowledge and “success”. Now they are ready to trade it all in along with their reputation, their livelihood and even their families for the hope of satisfying the deep, gaping hole they now realize exists in their real heart.
This potential is certainly not hypothetical – it is very real and is likely one of the greatest traps threatening millions of people unconscious of its existence. What I experienced in my dream seemed to fit this scenario except for the immoral opportunity, although it could easily include that if I was not careful. Maybe it was revealing a different solution to the very real problem of dormant lost dreams and unsatisfied heart-longings that could be yet realized in a positive environment. I do not have a conclusive understanding of what this meant or if there even is a reason for it. I guess that mostly it was a reminder that there is a whole lot more inside of me than I have been aware of and that I need to stay very focused on God to protect me from being blind-sided by attacks aimed at exploiting this very vulnerable area of my soul.
I also have to be careful not to respond by trying to ignore and repress these deep desires. Those emotions can easily overwhelm rules and parameters if they are not understood and respected. I must remember that only God can really satisfy my deepest cravings and that He will indeed do so in the safety of His ways and protections. It could turn into a very wild and possibly confusing time of transition because I will not be able to see where I am going at the time. But faith is believing in the good and perfect motives of the One into whose hands I continue to commit my present and future. God created my heart to start with and He is certainly not ignorant of the depth of my unfulfilled longings. He has a plan that will more than satisfy and ravish my heart while staying in the parameters of safety that will protect my heart from destructive and malicious evil that masquerades as an effective answer for my heart.
God, I trust you to protect my heart while at the same time making me aware of who I am, who I can become and experiencing much deeper, satisfying relationships with others that you will connect me with at a heart level. Only You can give me real satisfaction, and You will use others along with your personal presence to grow me into an exhibition of your grace and glory.
